SULPHUR, Okla. — The Chickasaw Nation will host the Southeastern Indian Traditional and Modern Regalia Showcase June 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside the Anoli' Theater at the Chickasaw Cultural Center.
The event, which is open to the public at no charge, will highlight the beauty, craftsmanship and cultural significance of both traditional and modern regalia.
Gina Brown, director of the Chickasaw Nation Genealogy Program, said regalia has played an important role in how Southeastern Indian tribes expressed identity and cultural pride for centuries.
“Culturally, our traditional regalia is very important to the Chickasaw people, but also to other Southeast tribes,” Brown said. “Each tribe always wore their best attire, and people knew us by what we wore.”
While some elements of regalia appear similar, Brown said each tribal nation maintains distinct characteristics.
“There are things that are still different about each tribe, and each tribe has a unique look,” she said.
The showcase is designed to offer attendees a unique opportunity to celebrate a diverse range of Southeastern Indian cultural expressions, including members of the Five Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee and Seminole) while providing an educational experience as well.
“I hope this educates the public, Chickasaw Nation employees and our communities on how to identify and appreciate our culture that has been passed down many generations,” Brown said.
