Ada, Okla. – Chickasaw Nation Governor Chris Anoatubby led ribbon-cutting ceremonies Sept. 15 to dedicate a unique fitness facility designed for Chickasaw elders.
A new site for the Chickasaw Nation Active Aging program, 229 W. Seabrook Rd., is the first of its kind in the Chickasaw Nation and represents the Chickasaw Nation’s continued investment in the health and future of Chickasaw people, Governor Anoatubby said.
“We are opening the doors to a new chapter in wellness in the Chickasaw Nation. We are creating a place for movement, friendship, culture and connection,” he said.
Planning for the facility began more than six years ago.
In 2020, the Chickasaw Nation began development of the facility specifically designed to support the fitness journeys of Chickasaws as they age. Governor Anoatubby said the intention was to offer elder citizens a place to be active, socialize, build friendships and feel a strong sense of belonging.
“Today, that vision becomes reality with the opening of active aging,” Governor Anoatubby said.
The facility is designed to positively impact, enrich and promote the holistic wellness of Chickasaw citizens age 55 and older, along with their spouses, by creating an environment that supports their health, well-being and quality of life, he said.
“We are dedicated to providing opportunities for Chickasaws to live healthy, active and fulfilling lives. Active Aging is one of many facilities and programs that are part of the long-standing commitment to supporting overall wellness.”
The facility features an indoor walking track, a dedicated aerobics room, state-of-the-art cardio equipment and resistance machines. Chickasaw Nation Active Aging participants can attend a variety of classes customized for all fitness levels, with movements and weights that can be modified for each individual. Personal training is also available.
Additionally, participants can enjoy full access to the sauna and a heated indoor pool for low-impact exercise and specialized aquatic classes.
Chickasaw culture is woven throughout the facility, featuring a mural painted by Dustin Mater and photography created by Chickasaw Nation Health Branding.
“These details help make this more than a fitness facility, they make it a place that feels distinctly Chickasaw,” Governor Anoatubby said.
Chickasaw Nation Active Aging shares a building with nutrition services and martial arts inside the Ada Family Life Center. It is open Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, call (580) 272-2605 or visit Chickasaw.net/ActiveAging.
