Program Details

Genealogy is the science of studying family history and lineage. Using Dawes Rolls records, federal census records, historical records and family files, the Chickasaw Nation Genealogy Program can assist with genealogy requests pertaining to the Five Tribes (Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole).

Chickasaw Nation genealogists are available to assist with family research in Ada, Oklahoma, at the Chickasaw Nation Culture and Humanities Building and in Sulphur, Oklahoma, at the Chickasaw Cultural Center, Holisso: The Center for Study of Chickasaw History and Culture.

To submit a genealogy request, view genealogy records or explore ancestry of the Five Tribes, please email Genealogy@Chickasaw.net or call (580) 310-6488 (Ada) or (580) 622-7156 (Sulphur).

The genealogical research conducted by the Chickasaw Nation Genealogy Program is exclusive to the Dawes Rolls, federal census records, historical records and family files. The program does not research before or after the years 1897-1906.

To conduct a search, the Chickasaw Nation Genealogy Program will need the following information: full names, birth years and other pertinent information about your direct, blood ancestors who were alive between the years 1897-1906 and living in Oklahoma at the time. This information is needed to begin researching names located within the Dawes Rolls. The Dawes Rolls, constructed from 1897-1906, include the Five Civilized Tribes: Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole. The program may be unable to locate the names on the Dawes Rolls at all if they were not enrolled.

If a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card has already been issued to you, please contact the CDIB office that issued your card for a copy of your file. This will expedite the search for your Chickasaw ancestors.

Other Information

The Dawes Rolls were taken during the years 1897-1906. To be listed on the Dawes Rolls, your ancestors must have lived in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) as recognized members or citizens of the Five Tribes (Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole).

The Dawes Rolls are the base records for enrollment in the Five Tribes in Oklahoma. To be eligible for citizenship, one or more direct lineal ancestors, by blood, must be listed on the Dawes Rolls and verified. State-issued birth or death records are required as proof of lineage back to an original enrollee. Tribes may have different requirements for citizenship, membership or enrollment.
