Embark on a two-week archaeological adventure in Mississippi and Alabama to study the historic Chickasaw Homeland. Join university faculty, staff and students to uncover the stories of Chickasaw ancestors through hands-on fieldwork.

Travel expenses, lodging and meals are provided. Participants must be able to perform activities that require mobility and endurance.

Program Details

This two-week archaeological fieldwork opportunity introduces young Chickasaw leaders to the field of archaeology. Participants will work alongside archaeology students and university faculty and staff to search for and investigate archaeological sites in Mississippi and Alabama, the historic Chickasaw Homeland.

Students are immersed in Chickasaw heritage at many historic and cultural sites visited throughout the program, including Tibbee Lake, Chokkilissa' (Old Town), the Chissa'Talla'a' Preserve and the 1736 Battle of Aahíkki'ya' site. Students take part in a Bear Creek canoe or kayak float trip, explore Paleo-Indian caves and hike the Cane Creek Canyon nature preserve in Alabama.

Travel expenses, lodging and meals are provided. Participants must be able to perform activities that require mobility and endurance.
