Chickasaw Explorers Program

The Chickasaw Explorers Program focuses on educating and training young Chickasaw leaders to identify and record ancient artifacts, participate in archaeological survey and excavations and search for the site of 1541 Chicasa in Mississippi. Chickasaw students work alongside archaeologists, educators and students from various universities in two-weeks of archaeological fieldwork.

Students are immersed in Chickasaw heritage at many historic and cultural sites, such as, but not limited to, Chokkilissa’-Old Town, the Chissa’Talla Preserve, and the 1736 Battle of Ackia site. Students may take part in a Bear Creek float trip explore Paleoindian caves, canoe sacred Tibbee Lake, and visiting the magnificent Moundville site on the Black Warrior river.

This is a two-week archaeological fieldwork opportunity, which includes travel expenses, lodging and meals.
