Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Youth Academy

The Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Youth Academy provides an excellent opportunity for Native American youth to explore a career in law enforcement. Academy students will hear presentations from law enforcement personnel who understand the daily challenges faced within the tribal law enforcement community; and learn life skills such as teamwork, communication, safety and crime prevention.

At the academy, lessons cover a wide spectrum of law enforcement procedures and practices. Participants will be presented with opportunities ranging from the proper use of handcuffs to the safest way to conduct a traffic stop. Students will learn the challenges faced by law enforcement officers on a daily basis.

The camp is free. Forty Native American youth, ages 9 to 15, will be selected based on answers to the application questions and a complete application form, including all waiver forms.

Camp activities will include:

  • Drills and Marching
  • Custody and Control
  • Handcuffing and Searching
  • K-9 Unit Demonstration
  • Vehicle Patrol and Traffic Stop
  • SWAT and Dive Team Demonstration
  • Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training Center (CLEET) Tour
  • Firearms Safety and Drills

This is a day camp located in Ada, Oklahoma, at the Lighthorse Police Department.

Transportation is not provided.

You Provide

  • A complete application form, including all waiver forms

Eligibility

  • Native American youth, ages 9-15 (40 will be selected based on answers to the application questions)
  • Chickasaw youth will be given first priority for slots in the camp with any remaining openings being given to other youth who are enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe
