The Chickasaw Nation Native Explorers Program is now accepting applications for its 2018 college program. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2018.

The Native Explorers program offers guided exploration of the natural world to Native American college students. Participants will travel with a team of Native American research scientists, educators and physicians on a scientific and cultural expedition.

Explorers can collect fossils at archeological sites in the Ozark Highlands, Boston Mountains, Central Great Plains and Cross Timber regions in Oklahoma, and possibly earn three hours of college credit for participation.

Activities will begin on the campus of Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Students will analyze human anatomy by comparing diseased and normal organs.

Students will identify fossil remains, read maps and write field notes. Physicians and medical students will teach participants about healthy lifestyles and medicine. The on-campus activities will be followed by a scientific excursion.

Applications are available to all eligible Native American college students. Eligibility requires a student to: be at least 18 years of age, be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe, have positive academic standing, have a high school diploma or equivalent and have a letter of reference from an academic instructor.

The program will take place May 21- June 1. Students can apply online at www.nativeexplorers.org. For more information, visit www.chickasaw.net/NativeExplorers.
