  • Community members who attend the Sept. 11 make-and-take class at Jet Stream Casino will create their own painted feathers, much like this one.

PAULS VALLEY, Okla. -- The Chickasaw Nation will host a feather art class 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Jet Stream Casino, 2001 W. Airline Road. All skill levels are welcome to attend the class which is open to the public at no charge.

Participants will paint and decorate feathers while learning about the use of feathers in Chickasaw culture. Seating is limited and registration is necessary.

Feathers were incorporated on regalia and headwear. Feathers were also used practically, as with fletching arrows or by tying them to blowguns to gauge the direction of the wind.

The Chickasaw Nation has planned monthly community classes for locations across south central and central Oklahoma all year. Class topics include language, dancing, pottery, finger weaving, beading and painting.

A language class will be offered Oct. 11 in Oklahoma City. Upcoming classes are also planned for Ardmore and Purcell.
