SULPHUR, Okla. – The long, dark days of winter are quickly fading, and the Chickasaw Cultural Center is preparing for the annual Three Sisters Celebration, set March 18-22.

The Three Sisters Celebration marks the return of spring and celebrates the ancient gardening method of planting corn, beans and squash.

When planted together, these crops are known as Three Sisters.

“They support each other, provide soil fertility and healthy crops,” Fran Parchcorn, Chickasaw Cultural Center Executive Officer, said.

“Spring is the season of renewal that promotes the Chickasaw Nation’s cultural system of support, strength and unity for the year,” she said.

“The Chickasaw people celebrate the kinship and cultural connection with nature and the ancient planting method,” she said. “Many activities are planned for this signature event which celebrate the change of seasons, highlight horticulture and our cultural connection to nature.”

Planned activities for the Three Sisters Celebration include outdoor cultural experiences, traditional Chickasaw food samplings and butterfly garden tours, to name a few.

Many activities are planned in the Chikasha Inchokka' Traditional Village, which features recreations of a Chickasaw village and reflects Chickasaw life in the 1700s. Activities include cultural demonstrations, traditional games, storytelling and much more, weather permitting.

Other planned events include live artist experiences, family-friendly movies in the Anoli' Theater and daily specials in the Aaimpa' Café, which will showcase traditional food ingredients.

Stomp dance demonstrations will take place daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center is located at 867 Cooper Memorial Drive in Sulphur. Three Sisters Celebration events take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., March 18-22.

The event is open to the public at no charge.
