October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Date: October 07, 2024

When people hear the phrase “domestic violence,” they often picture physical acts of abuse. Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, can also be controlling or possessive behavior, insults or shaming comments, intimidation tactics, threats of any kind and more.

None of these are OK.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity to share educational resources, uplift and support survivors and offer resources to individuals looking to leave a dangerous environment.

In Oklahoma, 40% of women and 38% of men experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes. These acts have a significant and negative impact on physical and mental health.

Survivors of this kind of abuse are three times as likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), engage in self-harming behaviors and have suicidal thoughts.

By learning about the signs of abuse, you can help protect yourself and others from further harm. You should never fear for your safety or your life in a healthy relationship.

If someone you know confides they are experiencing domestic violence, believe what they say and support them mentally and emotionally. Listen to their needs and decide how to move forward together. Remind them that any abuse is never their fault, and there are resources available to help.

Chickasaw Nation Domestic Violence Services offers resources including shelter, counseling and relocation assistance to all victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking who are residing or relocating within the Chickasaw Nation.
