Set in 1920s Montana, the story follows brothers Norman and Paul Maclean as they come of age under the guidance of their father, a Presbyterian minister who instills in them a love for fly-fishing and a deep respect for nature. While Norman chooses a steady, responsible path, Paul is charismatic but impulsive, drawn to life's temptations. Through triumph and tragedy, the river emerges as a powerful symbol of family, faith, beauty and the pursuit of understanding.
