ADA, Okla. – The Chickasaw Nation is accepting applications for the Chickasaw Choir Program.

The program will offer a training choir for ages 6-7, children’s choir for ages 8-12, vocal development lessons/youth ensemble for ages 13-18 and adult choir for ages 19 and up.

Lessons begin in September and will take place at the art and music facility, 816 Arlington Center, Ardmore Nutrition Services, 2350 Chickasaw Boulevard, and the Chickasaw Nation Community Center in Tishomingo, 818 E. Sixth St.

In Ada, the training choir will meet from 4 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays. Participants will be taught about their voice and music expression through vocal and rhythmic exercise as well as learning breath control.

The children’s choir will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays. Students will continue learning musicianship and musicality through vocal, rhythmic and breathing exercises, but will also work on sound development and performance skills.

Vocal development lessons will meet from 5:30 to 6 p.m. while the youth ensemble will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Mondays. The vocal development lessons are structured to assist singers with improving their vocal skills beyond the children’s choir.

The adult choir will meet 7 to 8 p.m.

In Ardmore, the training choir will meet from 5 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Participants will be taught about their voice and music expression through vocal and rhythmic exercise as well as learning breath control.

The children’s choir will meet 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Students will continue learning musicianship and musicality through vocal, rhythmic and breathing exercises, but will also work on sound development and performance skills.

Vocal development lessons will begin at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Thursdays and is structured to assist singers with improving their vocal skills beyond the children’s choir.

The adult choir will meet 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

In Tishomingo, the training choir will meet from 5 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Participants will be taught about their voice and music expression through vocal and rhythmic exercise as well as learning breath control.

The children’s choir will meet 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Students will continue learning musicianship and musicality through vocal, rhythmic and breathing exercises, but will also work on sound development and performance skills.

Vocal development lessons and youth ensemble will meet 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Tuesdays and is structured to assist singers with improving their vocal skills beyond the children’s choir. Separate sessions are available for the female voice and the changed male voice. Vocal development lessons can include reading music for beginners in that age group.

The adult choir will meet 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Students will learn songs in both English and Chickasaw, as part of efforts to preserve and revitalize the Chickasaw language.

The goal for the choir program is to offer opportunities for artistic and cultural expression through vocal music training and performances for Chickasaw and other youth.

The choir program is open to the public at no charge.
