COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance: Tenants


Out of an abundance of caution and to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, or COVID-19, certain Chickasaw Nation events, classes, facilities, etc., will be postponed, canceled or closed. For a complete list of postponements, cancellations or closures, visit the COVID-19 INFORMATION page. We will continue to update the list as the situation progresses.

The ERA Program is designed to provide rent and utility assistance to eligible households who have experienced financial hardship due directly or indirectly to COVID-19. 

Available assistance includes:

  • Current, future and/or past due rent
  • Current, future and/or past due utilities and home energy costs for tenant household
  • Other expenses related to housing

Applications are prioritized for:

  • An individual who has been unemployed for the 90 days prior to submitting the application for assistance.
  • Eligible households with income at or below 50% of the area median.
  • The payment of an eligible household’s existing housing-related expenses that could result in eviction.

Assistance may be issued for eligible costs incurred between March 13, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2022.

The Emergency Rental Assistance program (ERAP) will no longer accept new applications after July 1, 2022. ERAP will process all applications received up to this date. Eligible applicants who have applied but have not received funding by this date, will still have their application processed.


Eligible households include Chickasaw citizen renters, Chickasaw Nation or tribal subsidiary employee renters, renter households where a Chickasaw citizen or Chickasaw Nation or tribal subsidiary employee lives, or any household that leases/rents property from a Chickasaw citizen landlord or Chickasaw Nation or tribal subsidiary employee landlord.


  • Has a household income at or below 80% of the area median; and
  • Demonstrates a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability; and
  • ERAP may be able to provide assistance to households who have experienced a negative financial impact directly or indirectly due to COVID-19. This may include households or persons for which the following statements apply:
    1. You have been laid off.
    2. Your place of employment has closed.
    3. You have experienced a reduction in hours of work.
    4. You must stay home to care for children due to closure of day care and/or school.
    5. You must stay home to care for children due to distance learning.
    6. You have lost child or spousal support.
    7. You have had an increase in expenses due to COVID-19, i.e. food, child care, medical bills, etc.
    8. You have been unable to find employment due to COVID-19.
    9.  You are unwilling or unable to participate in your previous employment due to the high risk of severe illness from COVID-19.


The following is a basic list of documents you may need to provide to the ERA Program. Applicants may be asked to complete additional forms or provide additional documentation to demonstrate their eligibility. In order to keep your information safe, the application will time out after 60 minutes. Please ensure you have any required documentation available to complete the screening and application within the allotted time.

  • Current lease agreement
  • Contact information for your landlord (name, phone number, email address, etc.)
  • Documentation of rent owed (current and/or past due)
    • Examples:
      • rent ledger or statement from your landlord indicating month(s) for which rent is due
      • eviction-notice (if applicable)
  • Proof of income eligibility for all adults over 18, for all gross income earned in the 60 days prior to your application date if able to provide. Documentation is highly recommended but is NOT REQUIRED.
    • Examples:
      • check stubs
      • unemployment
      • emergency benefits statements
    • NOTE:
      • For adults over 18 with no income, a statement indicating they had no income
      • For Self-employment, Tax Form 1040 from previous year or bank statements for the 60 days prior to your application date
  • Valid Government/State issued photo ID for all non-Chickasaw household members age 18 and above
    • Examples:
      • Drivers' license
      • Tribal citizenship card (non-Chickasaw)
      • State issued ID card
  • Bank statements, Venmo or PayPal statement to show a pattern of paying rent to the landlord if the landlord is an immediate family member of any household member(s).
  • Supplemental documentation (if applicable):
    • Documentation showing one or more household members qualified for unemployment benefits
    • Copy of all past due utility bills
