DURANT, Okla. -- The Chickasaw Nation will host an outdoor showing of the 2017 movie “Beauty and the Beast,” 8 p.m., Aug. 19, at Ft. Washita, 3348 State Rd 199.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the event, which is open to the public at no charge. Complimentary popcorn and refreshments will be available.

The evening’s film is a live-action remake of the classic 1991 Disney animated film. The film’s themes include not judging a book by its cover, finding true love and getting by with a little help from friends.

Ft. Washita can be found between Tishomingo and Durant, near Lake Texoma and the Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge.

It was established in 1842 and has served many purposes since, including a means of stabilizing the area for the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes after their arrival in Oklahoma, then known as Indian Territory.

Multiple historic structures remain on the Ft. Washita grounds, including a hospital, surgeon's quarters, and barracks--all constructed with stone.
