Once removed to Indian Territory, the Five Civilized Tribes, including the Chickasaws, created elite police forces called the "Lighthorsemen." On their ponies, the lawmen roamed their nations and acted much as the Texas Rangers did. Many commanded as much respect. Some of the Lighthorsemen maintained order by acting as sheriff, judge and jury, often rendering summary judgment on offenders.
